A biography/family history of David J. Bedford is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 911 & 912. David's grandfather, a native of Wales, immigrated to Canada in the early 18th century, and spent 14 years as a prisoner and captive among the Indians. He became a farmer and had 14 children.

David Jasper Bedford was born, 14 May 1848, son of David and Mary (Moffett)(Knapp) Bedford. The father, David, was born about 1800 on the River Thames in Canada. He married Mrs. Mary (Moffett) Knapp in Peoria, IL, and about 1840 moved to a farm in Hancock County, IL. He died in Carthage in 1886. Mary (Moffett) Bedford was born in Zanesville, OH, 4 Mar 1820, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Moffett, natives of Ireland. Her first husband was Jerome Knapp and by that marriage she had a son, Lauren B. Knapp, who became a Montana pioneer. Children of David and Mary Bedford: David Jasper (Montana); Jane (Idaho); Mrs. Mary McArthur (Medicine Lake, MT).

David Jasper Bedford grew up in Illinois and at age 16 he joined Company K of the One Hundred and Thirty-third Illinois Infantry. He was discharged after four months without reaching the front. He worked on the family farm until coming to Montana with his mother and sister in 1873. They located in the Missouri Valley at old Centerville, now the site of Townsend, MT. After two years they moved to Jefferson County, at Radersburg, where David bought land and ran stock until 1882. He then moved to Judith Basin and continued in the stock business. Their home was 20 miles from Lewistown. In 1899 they drove their stock to Valley County in Eastern Montana and located near the site of old Medicine Lake. David was the first to build a house north of Culbertson, MT.

David Jasper Bedford did not marry. His mother died at Medicine Lake, November 1916.

I am not related.
