The only other Richard Batt or similar surname that I find in early America is a Richard Batts of which almost nothing is known. Richard Batts signs as a witness to a deed for Nathaniel Batts. The following deed was recorded in Virginia, but is the first known deed for land in present-day North Carolina. (Note: Nathaniel Batts appears as Nathaniel Batt in a few records in Maryland.)

Norfolk Co., VA: Book D, pg. 293. Court Jan. 18-1660. To all to whome these prts. Come greeting- These are to Certifie yt I Kisontanecoh Kinge of Yansakin [Kiscutanewh, King of the Yeopim Indians] have Sold & alienated from myself my heirs or assigns ye Land wch. Mr. Mason & Mr. Willoughby formerly bought of mee but never paid me for, to Mr. Nath. Batts [Mr. Nathaniel Batts] for a valuable consideration in hand received. vizt: all ye Lands on the Southwest side of Pascotanck River, from ye mouth of ye sd. River to ye head of Bogin Creeke, to have & to hold to him & his heirs for Ever, as Witness my hand ye twentieth fowerth [24th] of September 1660. Wit.: Richard Batts, George Durant. Signed: Kisontanoch (his mark)
