…Thought I would post this information in case it helps someone. The Richard Batt mentioned in the 1684 record may not be the same as the one mentioned in the 1675 record, but since both seem to have some connection to Virginia I thought they may be the same.
1674/75: “21 September, 26 Charles II.—True Bill that, at St. Katharine's co. Midd. on the said day, Richard Batt late of St. Katharine's aforesaid yeoman assaulted James Simons, and unlawfully conveyed him to a certain ship called The George, then lying in the river Thames, with the intention of transporting the same James Simons in the same ship, without his consent and against his will, to a certain place in parts beyond sea, called Virginea [Virginia], and there selling the said James Simons. Richard Batt put himself on a jury, and on 7 Dec., 1674, the jurors found him 'Not Guilty.' S. P. R., 8 Oct., 26 Charles II.” (‘Middlesex Sessions Rolls: 1674')
1674/75: “22 September, 26 Charles II.—Recognizances, taken before Josiah Ricroft esq. J.P., of Martin Wardman draper and James Cooper victualler, both of St. Katherine's near the Tower of London, in the sum of twenty pounds each, and of Richard Batt of St. Katherine's aforesaid habberdasher, in the sum of forty pounds: For the said Richard Batt's appearance at the next Session of the Peace for Middlesex, "to answeare to all such matters as shall be objected against him by Thomas Ball, for spirriting away his apprentice James Simmons on bord the shipp George, bound for Virginea [Virginia]." 1675. A record refers to “Margaret Batt wife of Richard Batt late of St. Katherine's yeoman” (‘Middlesex Sessions Rolls: 1675')
1684: Quarter Sessions Records. Plantation Indentures 1682/1683-1684. Indentures for service in Virginia. William Hanly, 28 [28 years old], to Richard Batt. 4 years. 18 August 1684. (Survey Report 2152, Pg. 5)
1684: Quarter Sessions Records. Plantation Indentures 1682/1683-1684. Indentures for service in Virginia. “Below are listed, in alphabetical order, the names of persons to whom service is pledged, …” One of those listed is “Richard Batt, merchant, of London”. (Survey Report 2152, Pg. 8)
