Hello, further to Gerald Batt’s message I can tell you the following about Henry Batt who married Sarah Vinnay in Dartmouth 1789.

Henry was said to be ‘of Alverstoke, Hants, mariner’. Two bits of circumstantial evidence make me believe that he was the Henry Batt who was baptised 1770 at Gosport, parents Henry Batt and Mary Cummins who married in 1769. I have no information on Sarah Vinnay but there were quite a few Vinneys in Devon so she may well have come from there.

Henry Batt and Sarah Vinnay had 4 children baptised at St Petrox Dartmouth: George Henry Graham Batt 1789, Salley Batt 1791, William Courtney Batt 1794 (my ancestor) and Henry Batt 1796. There were no more Batt entries in the parish registers after this suggesting that the family then moved elsewhere.

In 1803 Henry and Sarah lived in Portsmouth. The John Batt baptised 1801 Gosport may also be their son but I have not been able to prove this.

In 1796 Henry became a lieutenant and after that he did act as captain of ships. Around late 1805 it was reported that ‘Henry Batt, late commander of the Albatross sloop, died on board The Trident 2 days before she reached The Downs from the East Indies’. His will was proved in July 1806. Unfortunately I have been unable to find a reference to Henry’s death in the Trident’s records and have not yet found his burial which would be very useful if it gave his age.

I know that in November 1809 Sally Batt married Jacob Janson or Jenson in Portsea, and that being a minor it was with the consent of her widowed mother Sarah.

I have a few details of Henry’s naval career and more details of those of his sons William and Henry. If you think you are related to this family please let me know so that I can give you more information.

Carole Roberts.
